Chalk Painted Framed Mirror

Another thrift shop find for less than $3.00, woo-hoo!!  I found this cute little framed mirror last week and I wanted to try chalk paint – you know, where you make your own Annie Sloan Chalk Paint – there are tons of tutorials out there.  Which tutorial works best?  The one where you have access to all the ingredients :)

Any who – here’s what the original mirror looked like:

That’s right, you just paint chalkboard paint (I actually used chalkboard spray paint) right over that glass!

For the frame, I originally painted it red – you should never send a self professed color blind person to the store looking for a maroonish barn red color – just sayin…

So, I did what any DIY’er does when they don’t like what they see.  I painted over it with this pretty turquoise color.  I bought a little $2.99 paint sample from Home Depot (love that they sell these now!) and added one tablespoon of unsanded tile grout and a dab of water to give it that chalky feel (chalk paint).

After giving it two coats of paint, I lightly sanded it to make the red come out (be careful, or you’ll easily sand all the way down to the wood).  I then used Johnson’s paste wax to seal it.  I did not want to use Johnson’s wax due to the odor, but that’s all I could find at Home Depot.  If anyone has any suggestions of what else to use that you can get at a Home Depot, Lowes, or Menard’s, let me know!

Unfortunately, we don’t have an Annie Sloan distributor close to us.  I hear everyone raving about her products.

Here are a few more close-up pics (the indoor lighting was not good, but you still get the idea):

Overall, I like my first chalk paint project – my next attempt will be on a cute little dresser I picked up over the weekend.  Can’t wait to get started!

Chalkboard Painted Vase

I had a can of chalkboard paint lying around and I decided to make a little chalkboard paint vase.  I picked up this little gem from the thrift store for $1.99.  It’s pale green in color.  I like the dark black chalkboard paint against the light color of the vase. Who is Minnie? Minnie is my cute little grand-pup (on the right side of the doggie pic below). Who is Karl? He is the big golden retriever who lives behind us.  They bark at each other all the time – it’s so darn cute! I couldn’t get a good picture of Minnie and Karl together, so Lola had to do. Lola is the puppy my daughter fostered for 3 weeks – isn’t she super adorable? Seriously, super adorable!  Lola was about 6 weeks old in this picture and Minnie is 3. Minnie thought she was getting a sister....but Lola adopted out quickly.  Imagine that! Linking up with: Someday Crafts

I Tried Insanity!

Picture Credit: http://www.nike.com/nikewomen/content/collection/modules/favourites/products/lookbook_homepage_nike_free_high.jpg OK, not the whole program, but I tried the first DVD :) I’ve always been into fitness. I’m a regular subscriber to the magazine called “Fitness” I have a YMCA membership and I have a small home gym in my basement. Just because you have access to all this stuff, doesn’t guarantee that you will work out though. I’m also a sucker for Infomercials. Last year around this time, I bought Zumba – and that craze lasted about a month! Luckily, I was able to re-sell it on EBay right before Christmas for $50, getting most of my original investment back. This brings me to my first fitness tip of the year – if you’re not sure you’ll like a new fitness craze, try to buy it used off EBay or Craig’s List. A few weeks ago, my husband purchased “Insanity” off Craig’s List for $45 and it was still in the shrink wrap (the guy told us that he recently found out he had
