I’ve learned a lot from these seasoned vintage sellers. Here are a few parting words of advice:

What are your top three tips for getting more customers on Etsy?

Stacey from Vintage
Jane says “I have a lot of repeat costumers, so customer service is very important to me. I always ship out quickly, communicate often, and am always fair and kind. It also takes time to get your shop noticed, and list as many items as you can.

Laura from Peachy
Chic Boutique gives this advice:
1. Choose items the market wants (make adjustments as you go).
2. Choose language for titles customers will search for to find that item.
3. Good pictures will get you into treasuries & more exposure.

Susan from Callooh
Callay said “(1) have wonderful products, and do your research on how to present them and what key words to use; (2) take great pictures; (3) get out there and promote it in whatever way you choose (ads, blogs, treasuries, Twitter, etc.)--don't just expect people to find you.”

Finally, Cindy from Two Dog
Vintage says:
1. Great descriptors in your tags and titles
2. Make sure the first photo - the one that shows up in the search listings - is a great photo.
3. Tenacity - you can't post three items and sit around for 4 months waiting for them sell. If you treat your shop like a business (show up every day and do the work to make it successful) it will be!
This week we take a look at Pictures and the Front Page of Etsy. Our panel of vintage shop owners provides some pretty solid advice regarding this topic.
Pictures – any advice?

Gina from Rusty Secrets said “I try to take good pictures which will draw others to want to use my item in a Treasury. I have found that having an item featured in a Treasury brings my shop a lot of attention and some business.”

Stacey from Vintage Jane said “use natural light, play around with camera, get many angles, and show how the item could be used.”

I got this advice from one shop owner: “The clearer the better, Etsy has good advice on how to brighten your photos. I try to show my items - warts and all. Show up close, eye level, looking down, etc. I take way too many photos for one item so I can pick the best and most interesting. One thing though...I notice a lot sellers cut off their products when viewing them with a list of similar items on Etsy. The pictures look great when you click on them and are able see the whole shot, but I'd rather you see mine right away. Focus on the product and not a pretty picture you think Etsy might like. Lastly, not everything looks good on a white background (aka clear glass bottles)”

Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique said “keep working on improving your pictures. Study other shops for background, staging, & prop, ideas. Again, I generally follow this formula:

· 1st photo is your money shot. Make it an "action" (on a slant) pic if you can.
· Next, close up shot.
· Next, take a measurement shot.
· A back or label photo
· Nice ending photo...I always add one pic showing the full item.

The best photo advice: “photos are for INFORMATION...this is what they need to give the buyers, as well as being attractive. I often will do a collage of pics if I need more than 5 shots. I use Photoscape which is a free download & simple to use.”

Susan from Callooh Callay said “My main advice about pictures is to keep learning and improving. It's worth investing in a good camera and learning what you can about how to use it, plus keep innovating (changing backgrounds, trying different lighting, etc.). This is one of the most critical areas for your shop.

Cindy from Two Dog Vintage said “Good, natural, medium light - NO FLASH!! – and a decent photo editing program. Did I mention NO FLASH?!! Use photo editing software to brighten and add contrast. Make sure your item fills the shot and set your camera on the highest resolution. It's better to have to resize your too-big pics than have shots so tiny that no one can get a good look at the items.”

Analysis: Personally, this has been the thorn in my side! Some people have amazing product pictures which makes me WANT to buy their item. I hope to take a little advice from each shop owner and apply it over the next several weeks to “up” my game and really show my products off. I hope you will be able to take something away from this as well. Do you have any picture advice you would like to share?

Have you ever been on the Front Page of Etsy or been mentioned in an Etsy Blog?

Stacey from Vintage Jane said “I’ve been on the Front page several times....through others Treasuries.....been in several of Etsy's articles. Great, free exposure.....just luck, really....but Etsy Admin uses Etsy to "search" items for their articles, so Key words so important!”

Susan from Callooh Callay said “I've been on the front page a number of times and had my items featured in Etsy Finds, the blog, etc. I think being in a lot of treasuries helps because then Etsy Admin sees you there. To be in treasuries, you need to (1) have good pictures and (2) make a lot of treasuries. Listing new items a lot helps too.”

Cindy from Two Dog Vintage said “I have had items on the front page and in emails many times. I've never been featured on the Etsy blog. When items have been included in the mailings like "Etsy Finds" or "Etsy Gifts" - I get LOTS of favorites for both the item and my shop and occasionally it results in the item selling”

Analysis: Getting on the Etsy Front Page or being mentioned in an Etsy Blog seems to be a combination of a little luck as well as: frequent listings, good key words, being in treasuries, and great pictures!

Click here to read Parts 1 thru 3. This week, we explore the best way to be “found” on Etsy and key word advice from our top vintage Etsy sellers. Let’s jump right in.

Out of the hundreds of thousands of items and shops on Etsy – what is the best way to be “found” in your experiences?

Stacey from Vintage Jane said “Best way to be found is through Etsy "search"

Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique said “I think SEO words are the best way to be found. Describe your item in the exact words you think someone would search for your item. I always put the word Vintage first, if appropriate to the item. Adding a color to the title will help people making treasuries or searching for that color find you. I copy my titles into my tags & separate with commas. I always add my shop name as a tag.”

Susan from Callooh Callay said “I think paying attention to SEO is one important aspect of being found (don't know what the "most important" is). A lot of people looking for specific vintage items come straight from google, so you have to set the listings up right to come up high in the search.”

Cindy from Two Dog Vintage said “Key words and good titles. period.”

Analysis: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is key to being found in Google Search Results. What is SEO? SEO is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to your by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of major search engines. It includes keywords you use in your listing titles, tags, and text body.

Key Words on Listings – any advice?

Gina from Rusty Secrets has a lot of good advice: “If something is in my shop for a long time I mark it down substantially and renew the listing, then it usually sells. This tells me my price was too high. When I put something on sale I always try to remember to use "SALE" as a tag word.

Some good tag words that I use for my items are: shabby antique, shabby primitive, primitive antique, folk art, shabby cottage, PINK, antique victorian, mid century, vintage, etc. Always try to use all 13 tag words. Always list your shop as one of your tag words and any team names you may be a member of.”

Stacey from Vintage Jane said “use all your options and think like a shopper when listing key words.” Mary Kaye from the Lost Rooms said “Guess work for me, I try to follow Etsy suggestions and when I run out of ideas and I'll save the last two for my team tags, but I do suggest using them all (all 13 tags).”

Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique said “I use short words in my descriptions. Try to keep it simple with lots of white space. I am not one who usually tells stories or adds an overabundance of research.” I do have a general formula: Description at top with facts of the item, dates, etc...usually copying the title in the first few words again, helps you be found on google (an SEO tip!). Next - description of item conditions, disclosing any flaws, highlighting any points. Lastly, I give size measurements (I always try to include a pic with ruler, also).

Cindy from Two Dog Vintage said “If you needed to describe something to someone without having the item to show, what words/phrases would you use? Those are the key words you should use on your listing.” Analysis: Always, always use all 13 key word tags. I would also put your shop name as a key word. Think like a shopper – if you were looking for this item on google, what key words would you type in the search box?

I have learned a lot of valuable tips about getting more vintage sales on Etsy. In Part 1, we talked about displaying at antique and/or craft fairs and whether or not each shop had a business Facebook page or advertised on blogs. In Part 2, we covered ads and apps. Now it’s time to move on to packaging and Etsy teams - do they really help you get more sales? Let’s find out! You can see my original list of twelve questions in Part 1.

Do you send something special in your packaging (i.e – magnets with your shop name, etc.). If so, what do you send?

Stacy from Vintage Jane said “I do not send anything extra in packages, but pack very neatly, with business card and logo sticker.”

Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique said “Yes, I always send something in my packages to my customers, just a little thank you...it may be a vintage playing card, postcard, bookplate, sticker...anything light weight that is appropriate generally to what they have bought. It also depends on what items I come across in my search for vintage products or have in my "stash" of goodies. One of my favorite items was when once I came across a bunch of large, black & white ROUTE 66 stickers, shaped like a highway road sign. These were so perfect for a vintage shop giveaway, I have considered finding a shop that I can order some from! Sometimes I wrap a train case in big maps & add the sticker with my packing slip, to give it a great, coordinated look:) Packaging is an area I thoroughly enjoy!”

Susan from Callooh Callay said “No presents sent--just a business card with a code for 10% off on the back.” Cindy from Two Dog Vintage said “No. I am proud of my packaging and have gotten lots of compliments on it but I don't include premiums or freebies.”

Analysis: It appears that at a minimum, everyone sends a business card. To stand out, you should spend a little time on your packaging – you want people to remember you. I like what Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique had to say. You should match your packaging to what you are selling. I plan on ordering logo stickers and getting tissue paper that matches the colors of my logo. I can definitely improve in this area! It’s a tough balancing act; you want your packaging to stand out without increasing the total cost of shipping.

Are you involved in the Etsy community (Treasury Teams, etc.)?

Gina from Rusty Secrets is a member of one team based out of her home state of Maine.

Vintage Jane and Two Dog Vintage are both on one or two teams, but are very inactive.

Peachy Chic Boutique said “I have only made, I think, 2 treasuries, it's fun, but I really don't have the time. I do enjoy being featured in other people's treasuries! I am on 2 active vintage teams, the best is Team Madcap; I always put that tag on my items so the other team members can find my items to add to their treasuries. I am in treasuries almost every day! I think that has definitely helped my sales. I also read the Forums every morning to keep my pulse on what is happening & add a post if I can help someone.’

Susan from Callooh Callay said “Yes, I'm on several teams--a few "treasury" teams and a few vintage teams.”

Analysis: Based on the feedback received, I think it helps to be on teams that help promote other team members. Take Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique for example – she is in treasuries almost every day! I recently joined “Etsy Team Columbus” and they promote several treasuries per week. Since joining Etsy Team Columbus, my sales have definitely increased!

Last week we learned about whether or not those who are in the upper echelon of vintage sellers on Etsy do craft and /or vintage fairs, have a business Facebook page and whether or not they blog or advertise on other blogs (if you missed Part 1, please click here to read more about it). This week, we tackle ads and apps.

Do you pay for Google Ads or Etsy Ads and do you use any Etsy Apps?

Stacy from Vintage Jane said “I do pay for Etsy ads only.”

Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique said she uses the Etsy coupon code feature from time to time.

Susan from Callooh Callay does not pay for any ads, but does use the app called “Shmetsy” for making Treasury Lists.

Analysis: Interestingly, most DO NOT pay for ads or use Etsy apps. None of the participants interviewed used the Etsy On Sale app.

How often do you list your items on Etsy?

Gina from Rusty Secrets said “I continually try to list items or renew items on a regular basis (hopefully every day, but sometimes I am unable to do that). If something is in my shop for a long time I mark it down substantially and renew the listing, then it usually sells. This tells me my price was too high.”

Stacy from Vintage Jane said “I try to list several items several times a week”

Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique said “I list items on Etsy as often as possible - everyday if I can. During my first Christmas season, I had up to 260 products listed!...I have never gotten back to that number, either I sell, or items expire...so I'm always trying to build that number. When sales are slow is a good time to work on more listings.”

Susan from Callooh Callay said “Right now I don't have time to do much, but in a normal month I list probably four or five days a week (so maybe five to 10 items a week).”

Cindy from Two Dog Vintage said “I list or renew 5 items per day in my vintage shop and 2 per day in my art shop.”

Analysis: This is a great category to analyze! From what I can gather, relisting “several times per week” works best and everyday is even better. I know personally, I relist when I have time which sometimes equates to once a week. Here is an area I can do better with! What about you?

Next week, we will look at packaging and involvement with the Etsy community – do these two things help produce more sales?

Since vintage is a somewhat newer category on Etsy. I thought I would go straight to the source – those who are kicking some major butt selling vintage items on Etsy. As a result, I plan on doing a six part series on the topic.

After googling the search term “how to get more vintage sales on Etsy” I was taken to the web site Craft Count which has a listing of the top 250 vintage shops with the most sales on Etsy – what a great place to start my research! I randomly began selecting different shops and sent an email to each of them asking if they would be so kind to answer twelve questions (I know, that’s a lot to ask of a total stranger!). Here is my list of questions:

1. Do you display at craft/antique fairs?
2. Do you have a blog or do you advertise on other blogs?
3. Do you have a Facebook page and/or Twitter account that you utilize for your shop?
4. Do you pay for Google Ads or Etsy Ads?
5. Do you use apps such as “Etsy On Sale”
6. Do you send something special in your packaging (i.e – magnets with your shop name, etc.). If so, what do you send?
7. How often do you list your items on Etsy?
8. Are you involved in the Etsy community (Treasury Teams, etc.).
9. Out of the hundreds of thousands of items and shops on Etsy – what is the best way to be “found” in your experiences?
10. Key Words on Listings – any advice?
11. Pictures – any advice?
12. Have you ever been on the front page of Etsy, been featured, or had the Etsy Blog write about your shop or item? If so, can you expand on this?

From you own experiences, what are your top 3 tips for getting more customers to your Etsy shop?

I’m not sure how many emails I sent out, but I got six fabulous responses from some of the top vintage sellers on Etsy! I’d like to share these responses with you - my blog readers!

Question 1. Do you display at craft/antique fairs?

Gina from Rusty Secrets said “I don't do craft fairs...I live in Northern Maine and things are very slow here to make that worth my while. I do try to list a variety of things that would be of interest to both men and women from pink doily’s to rusty signs. Diversify is the key word for making money in Maine and it also is for my Etsy shop. I read this advice in an Etsy column when I first started to sell, "Water Your Etsy Shop Every Day And It Will Grow."

Gina has 418 items listed
Been open since April 2009
Sales: 1,943

Laura from Peachy Chic Boutique said “I have done a few flea markets with vintage items, but find it much harder work physically, than having an Etsy shop, so I am not doing those any more.”
Shop Name: Peachy Chic Boutique
Laura has 148 items listed
Been open since Jan 2009
Sales: 1841

Cindy from Two Dog Vintage said “I do a few juried, fine craft shows each season selling my bead embroidery and mixed media artwork. I don't sell my vintage items at flea markets or antique shows.”

Shop Name: Two Dog Vintage
Cindy has 384 items listed
**Vintage Jewelry is her biggest category
Been open since June 2008
Sales: 1661

Analysis: From the comments received, most DO NOT do craft or vintage fairs.

Questions 2 and 3. Do you have a blog, advertise on other blogs, or have a business Facebook page?

Gina from Rusty Secrets said “I do not blog, even though I want to hopefully sometime soon, but I do have a Facebook page for my antique shop that has a button at the top to access my Etsy shop.”

Stacy from Vintage Jane said “I do not blog or advertise on blogs, BUT my items have kindly been in many blogs and magazines!” Stacy does have a business Facebook page.

Shop Name: Vintage Jane
Stacey has 209 items listed
Been open since July 2008
Sales: 2541

Cindy from Two Dog Vintage said “I have a blog - www.artfullivingonthebluff.blogspot.com - where I share my creative pursuits and some vintage finds.

Analysis: From the comments received, four of the six have Facebook business pages and only two of the six have blogs. None of those interviewed advertise on other blogs.

Stay tuned for part 2 of the series where we find out about paying for ads and using Etsy Apps to generate more sales (or not).
I LOVE this piece and only wish I had room to keep it! I had so much fun putting this together!

This repurposed cabinet has been painted with CeCe Caldwell paint (I mixed 3 different colors together) and then stained with CeCe Caldwell's Dark Wax.

After painting was completed, I added a vintage white metal basin which can hold ice. This piece cannot be removed, so you will have to remove your ice when done by hand.

Handles are copper. Colors are shades of dark blue with hints of brown from the original color of the cabinet showing through. Gorgeous!!

Measurements with the piece closed are:
17.5 inches deep
22 inches wide
31 inches tall
Roller skating is a favorite past time of many Americans. I went as a young teenager and my children had many birthday parties at the local skating rink. It’s one of those old fashioned activities that has definitely stood the test of time. Do you have an old pair just lying around? I picked up these two pair at an auction recently. They both have wooden wheels and were made by the Chicago Skate Company. Probably from the 1950’s.

A cool little piece for the mid-century, art deco or industrial enthusiast.

Typewriter comes with original case that is in very good condition. When you open the case, the vintage aroma takes you back in time when things were much more simple.

My suggestion: Get it before it's gone, but most importantly - have a wonderful weekend!
I had read book after book on things like “How To Discover Your Strengths” and “The Secret” and “See You At The Top” just to name a few.

I was tired of reading! I just wanted to try something…. anything.

I started the year off with a jewelry making class at the local Cultural Arts Center. I made a beautiful bird shaped nickel bracelet while learning a lot of new skills along the way.

Next, I gave screen-printing a try and I really, really liked it! I liked it so much that I started making screen printed ipad and messenger bags and started selling them on Etsy. I continued on the self-journey.

My husband won a trip enabling us to travel to London and Rome. We also went on a ten day cruise and visited places like Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada and Puerto Vallarta. My head was filling with ideas after visiting these places!

But I’ve got to tell you, I hit gold when on a whim, I attended my very first live auction out in the country this past August. It was truly an “aha” moment. I LOVED being there and I was so excited - it was that feeling I had been chasing for so long!

My Very First Auction Purchase was a Vintage Typewriter

Since that moment in August, I have been attending auctions on a weekly basis. I expanded my Etsy shop and opened a small vendor booth at a local antique mall. It is a lot of work, but I never get tired of it. I LOVE all things vintage and when I look back at my life, it had always been there, I think just had to realize it on my own. My hubby tried to point it out to me one time, but I blew it off as a dumb idea. I remember him saying, “you really like finding stuff at the thrift shop, can’t you do something with that”? Ha, ha, little did I know!

So my message is to embrace who you are and go with your gut even if it doesn’t make sense at the time. I am so glad I started this little blog as “Twelve Discovery Drive.” I finally found what I have been looking for!

Yeah, me :)

To see vintage items before they hit my Etsy shop, like my Facebook page.
I think if I did not have a full time job, I would enjoy writing this little blog a whole lot more! I don’t plan on going anywhere though as I’ve discovered it’s a great way to chronicle life, family, and adventures, my favorite three things in the whole world! So, my personal adventure continues….

Over the past month of so, I took a break to open up a small space at an antique mall in Columbus, OH. After attending a live auction at the end of August, I have been full steam ahead.! I think I knew this all along, but I am now 100% sure that I love all things vintage and/or antique! Well, most things.

Take this chest of drawers for instance. When I picked it up, it had a huge water stain on the top and one of the drawers kept sticking.

I looked at it and looked at it and finally thought, I like the bones of this piece. I want to make it beautiful again!

It sat in my garage for a few weeks…I thought about it each each time I passed by. I wanted to pick the perfect color and I don’t start painting until I have a plan.

I chose gray, with homemade chalk paint! I really, really want to try Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, but that paint is so darn expensive! I also wanted to try a technique I had been reading on some of the blogs I follow where they number each drawer – so I gave it a shot!

I’m LOVING the way it turned out! What do you think?
So, here are the few I was able to take.

Old beer bottles turned into glasses.
I also had a purse and souvenir bag from Rome.

We’re not really sure about the best way to get to our hotel which is on the outskirts of London (about a 45 minute drive without traffic). Probably should have researched before leaving!

Hubby stops and asks airport information “what’s the most inexpensive way to get to East Croydon.” After what seems like a ten minute conversation, hubs comes back and has a plan. We are headed to the Underground to take the Tube. At this point, I’m excited! It’s just another adventure in a brand new country!

What I didn’t realize is that this little adventure would take almost three hours and require us to change train stations at least three different times, all while lugging these 50 pound suitcases – right into rush hour! At one point we were packed in like sardines and I started to panic trying to figure out how we were going to be able to get off the train together with all our luggage before the doors slammed shut.

Can you imagine the look I gave Greg as we began hour three of this seemingly endless journey!

Well here is the look he gave me when I took one too many pictures:

Trust me, my look was much worse!

I was thinking, where did he book this hotel? Why is it so far from the airport? In his defense, everything is far from Heathrow. Poor guy, he didn’t realize we would have to change trains so many times. Luckily, the hotel he booked was brand new and it ended up being a really nice place to stay. It was the Hampton Inn in East Croydon. Rooms are small, but that's typical in London.

Lesson learned: Learn a little about the transportation options before you get to your destination – especially when in a different country!

Travel Tip: Buy the Travel Card. It is only about $8 and you can use it for 24 hours. We bought one each day we were there. It gets you on the Underground and city buses.
I picked up this beautiful vintage Kling dresser on Craig’s List. The only scary part was asking hubby to pick it up sight unseen by me! He just picks up, he has no idea what he is really buying….fortunately, this was a fabulous buy!

I always let my furniture sit for a week or two while I contemplate what color I think will match the look and feel of the dresser. After two long weeks, I finally decided on a shade of teal.

It’s funny though, my original plan was to paint an undercoat of green and then put teal over it so when I sanded it, some of the green would show though. For some reason, this did not work. When I sanded, the original wood came through. In hindsight, I think I know what I did wrong and how to correct it the next time.

Plan B – forget about the green and go with the shabby teal look! One thing I have learned, always have a Plan B!

I used home-made chalk paint and gave it a couple coats of teal. I then applied a dark stain and before it dried, wiped it off. I finished with mini-wax paste to give it a polished look.

I always try to leave the original wood top if it is in good condition. I just removed the old stain, sanded it down and re-applied the new stain. I then applied some wipe on poly to the top to help protect it.

I listed this piece on Craig’s List and I had at least ten people that wanted to buy it. I eventually sold it to a girl that will be using this piece in her new nursery – I think it was meant for her home!
It was solid with no broken pieces. The inside was in pristine shape. I snatched it up!

I let it sit in the garage for a few weeks while trying to decide on a color. What color would sell quickly on Craig’s List? That’s always a tough one. I finally decided on light gray since I had some extra lying around.

I made some home-made chalk paint and lightly distressed the table after painting. I stayed with the original hardware by spray painting the pulls in copper. I also waxed the sides and front and sealed the top since I know this is the area that will get a lot of use and wear.

Here is the before picture:
Plans for the Tower Bridge were devised around 1876 when the east of London became crowded and a bridge across the Thames seemed necessary.

The bridge used to open almost 50 times a day but now it is only raised about 1,000 times a year. Bridge lifts are pre-scheduled (for cruise ships, etc) so check the bridge's website to find out times.

Did you guess right?

Since Londoners drive on the left side of the road, it's important to make sure you look the right way when crossing the street. Often times you will see directions painted on the street at crossings to remind you to look the right way. This was definitely the hardest thing to get used to and London streets can be so busy! If you go with kids, please be careful!

Happy Traveling!!
Luckily, I was able to talk hubby into going with me!

After quickly searching the internet, I found an auction that sounded interesting and was only about 40 minutes away. The auction started at 10:00 a.m., but by the time I decided to go it was already noon. I called the auction to make sure it wasn’t too late. The lady that answered the phone told me to come on out. The auction would be going on until at least 5 p.m.

Hubs and I headed out and found it pretty quickly. At first there were signs “Auction Ahead” and then there were lots of cars with very little parking! I didn’t care, I was super excited!

There were two auctions going on at once (outdoors). Household items were being auctioned off in the front and tools and furniture in the back. My mind was going a mile a minute trying to figure out if I should go to the back or stay in the front!

I finally saw something that I wanted to bid on, but found out you needed a tag with a bidder number in order to bid. I went to the little trailer to pick mine up. I told the lady at the trailer that this was my first auction and she smiled and encouraged me to have a good time.

I walked away with my bidder tag in hand and headed to the back where I saw a couple things that interested me. The auctioneer then picked up a vintage Smith Corona typewriter and something inside of me said “I want that” so I raised my hand for my first ever auction bid. I wasn’t going to stop until I won that thing :)

SOLD – for $12.50! I won! Yeah, I won!

It was a fun kind of rush – I won three more lots/items before we headed home.

I am definitely hooked….

I love auctions – who would have known!
The color red was chosen simply to make them easier to spot.

I read an article while in London that said some people in the UK want to get rid of the red telephone booths. I will admit that I saw some that either had grafitti or broken glass. I stepped into one to make a pretend phone call and it smelled of urine - yuck! Pass the hand sanitizer please!

But those that were intact were beautiful - I say don't get rid of them London! They make for a great marketing opportunity. I stopped by to take a pic whenever I had the chance as did countless others.

They’re nostalgic to say the least… I would love to have one sitting in my backyard although I’m not sure if my neighbors would appreciate it very much!
